The greatest comparative advantage of Rijeka is its geostrategic position, thanks to which it was included on the map of nine most important European transport corridors. Located in a deep section of the Kvarner Bay, where the Mediterranean meets Western Europe, Rijeka achieves all the prerequisites for the development of maritime management and related activities at a site where two European world join together.


Economic activities related to the sea, such as a port, shipyard and tourism, representing at both the legacy of Rijeka and the potential for future development of the city and the metropolitan area of Rijeka, and the zones of influence on its surroundings, is the local market for all the products and services of the city.

The fundamental natural resource of Rijeka is an abundance of high-quality drinking water, whose main source of the river Rječina. In the center of town there are 16 drinking water sources, and the estuary of Rječina to the Adriatic Sea is the most important feature of Rijeka.


The Kvarner Bay in which Rijeka lies links all natural diversities that are intertwined in the area of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is this diversity of content in a small space, the combination of the coast, islands and mountains, the fundamental advantage of tourist offer and new economic structure of the regional economy. All this represents a reasonable foundation for further investments in improving transport infrastructures (roads, railways, maritime transport and the airport on the island of Krk), as well as all the projects that will serve for the future urban development.

The City of Rijeka, as large Croatian city, achieves even stronger potentials with Croatian joining to the European Union. In the Development Strategy of the City of Rijeka for the period from 2014th to 2020th year, there are three main objectives: the development of the Rijeka Gateway Project, the development of new knowledge and new technologies based economy and social inclusion of all residents.


In Rijeka Gateway Project are invested significant resources in the construction of new port infrastructure and a new marina with supporting facilities. In collaboration with the University of Rijeka, Rijeka continues building the campus of Rijeka, and encourages all scientific research projects to support the local economy.

The City projects are attracting EU funds, private and public investors, developing partnerships at European level, and what is of crucial concern of economic development: looking for investors who will invest in economic projects.

Rijeka is just entering into the largest investment cycle in the last 200 years: a modern port, road and rail infrastructure, water supply and drainage infrastructure, University Campus, University Hospital, new marina, new stadium – these are just some of the great projects the implementation of which has already began.

  • the City of Rijeka is located at 14 º 26 ‘east longitude and 45 º 21’ north latitude.
  • the City of Rijeka covers an area of about 44 km2. In this area there are 128,624 inhabitants (Census of 2011), which represents one of the highest population density in this part of Europe, from 2,923 inhabitants per km ².

The length of Rječina (the area from the city to the estuary) is of 7.5 km, and Rječina flows into the sea in the area of the Delta. The northeastern part of  Rijeka is water protection area for the river Rječina, and in the very center of the city there are 16 drinking water sources. It is this combination of the river Rječina and the Adriatic Sea the most important feature of Rijeka and it represents the great potential for economic development.
